Why does my cat sometimes chatter his teeth?

When sitting and looking through a window, a cat will often chatter its teeth when watching potential prey such as chipmunks, squirrels, mice, or birds. This is likely a response to intense excitement, but it is poorly understood what advantage this behaviour might confer on the usually silent hunters if chattering also occurs during outdoor hunts. Dogs sometimes chatter their teeth during periods of intense excitement as well, especially when food or treats may be coming their way!
